Novell Consultant & Systems Administrator
The original job description was for a Novell administrator to do a forensic recovery of a back-up tape for a legal case. I was given 3 months for this task, and completed it in under 3 weeks. I spent the remainder of the contract in a systems administration role, directly serving the IT needs of the CEO, Executives, and the board of directors of Silicon Graphics. I specialized in remote computing, mobile computing, and telecommuting. Key responsibilities lay in using samba to integrate the IRIX desktop computers with executive laptops runing Windows, as well as configuring home networks, VPN’s T-1 lines, and ISDN connections, video conferenceing, and special engagements working with the corporate briefing center on larger scale graphical supercomputer demonstrations. This 3-month contract lasted for 15 months.
Contingent work contracted through Taos Mountain Software of Palo Alto. Taos Mountain recruited me from college in Toledo, Ohio, and relocated me to the SF Bay Area for this specific consultation engagement. The engagement’s original scope of work was completed far in advance, and SGI chose to retain my services for the remainder of the contract to assist in day to day systems administration tasks. Without a pre-defined scope of work, my responsibilities on this contract expanded into a wide array of special tasks. Due to contractual client restrictions on contractors , SGI could not directly hire me permanently for a period of 6 months. I left this contract to pursue other work until SGI could hire me full time.
